An American journalist was detained in Russia: WSJ openly addressed Putin and Biden
The FSB of Russia reported on March 30 that Evan Hershkovich, a US citizen born in 1991 and a correspondent of the Moscow branch of the American newspaper The Wall Street Journal accredited to the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, was detained in Yekaterinburg.
American journalist Evan Hershkovich was detained in Yekaterinburg. The Russian Federation suspects him of espionage. It was established that Hershkovich «acting on behalf of the American side, collected information that constitutes a state secret about the activities of one of the enterprises of the Russian military-industrial complex.»
This is written by EADaily.
The FSB of Russia initiated a criminal case according to Art. 276 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation («Espionage») against Hershkovich. Kremlin spokesman Peskov said that the American was detained red-handed.
Responding to the detention of its journalist, The Wall Street Journal called for the expulsion of the Russian ambassador from Washington and all Russian journalists. This was stated in the publication’s column.
«This is less than one would expect,» the publication emphasizes.
The WSJ urged the administration of US President Joe Biden to consider «diplomatic and political escalation».
«The first obligation of the US government is to protect its citizens, and too many governments today believe that they can arrest and detain Americans with impunity,» the publication emphasizes.
Representatives of the publication emphasize that President Putin is now responsible for the health and safety of Evan Hershkovich, and the Biden government is responsible for his release.
